RDP prefers Weighbor. The Ribosomal Database Project (now at rdp.cme.msu.edu ) is a government funded resource at Michigan State University providing services for all aspects of ribosomal RNA sequence data. The phylogenetic trees now available for RDP 8.0 were built exclusively using the Weighbor program. Weighbor allows RDP to rapidly update its many large trees without subdividing and reassembling the trees, as was necessary when RDP used maximum likelihood trees (RDP release 7.1 and earlier). RDP curators were concerned that continually adding taxa to their maximum likelihood tree without recomputing the entire tree could have been causing distortions to the tree.
